Vocabulary

Vocabulary is critical for our students to better understand concepts and principles. Marzano has created a process to help students fully develop understanding of what words mean. Follow these steps until it becomes automatic. Step One: Provide a description, explanation or example of the new word. Step Two: Student restates provided description, explanation or example in their own terms. Step Three: Students provide a visual depiction of term or act it out. Step Four: Teacher provides further activities with the term so that students refine and deepen understanding of the term. Students write in vocabulary notebook. Step Five: Teacher asks students to use term with other students frequently to use in context. Step Six: Teacher provides games for students to reinforce the learning of the term. Please post your results, thoughts, and comments. Thanks in advance. Resources Marzano, R. and Pickering, D. (2005). Building academic vocabulary: Teacher’s manual. Alexandria, VA: ASCD.
